Curriculum

The PhD program in Translation Studies aims to encourage and promote independent research and scholarship in all fields related to translation and interpreting, including theoretical, historical, critical and methodological aspects of the field. One of the main aims of the PhD program is to examine the cultural interaction between Turkey and other cultures through the phenomenon of translation. As research into cultural processes requires an approach that includes disciplines such as sociology, literature, psychology, history, political science, philosophy and cultural studies, the PhD program is designed to offer a multidisciplinary perspective

Candidates for admission must be competent in a third language (in addition to Turkish and English) approved by the Department and must fulfill all other requirements specified in the regulations of the Institute for Graduate Studies in Social Sciences. Students entering the program from outside the Department may be required to take certain prerequisite courses specified by the Department. The program requires the successful completion of 8 courses (24 credits), followed by a qualifying examination, the submission of a PhD dissertation, and the oral defense of the latter.

Seminar on key texts. Exploration of different concepts of translation (through the 19th century) and their influence upon the practice of literary translation.

In-depth critical analysis of modern theoretical writings on translation.

TR 621 History of Translation in Ottoman/Turkish Society
Perspectives on the practice of literary/non-literary translation, its historical and institutional aspects. Translation in relation to cultural change in the Ottoman and Republican periods. Seminar with the participation of specialists in the field.

TR 680-689 Special Topics in Translation Studies
Comparative study of translation and reception theories, with analysis of their mutual impact.

TR 700 Graduate Seminar
Seminars offered by faculty, guest speakers and graduate students designed to widen students' perspectives on specific topics of interest and to expand their range of scientific research techniques and publication ethics. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.

Active translation work in poetry and prose. Emphasis on a critical awareness of theory in the practice of translation.

TR 630 Research Methods in Translation Studies
Survey of recent research and scholarship in translation studies. Exploration and development of methods applicable to research on the transfer and reception of texts, and on translated literature in Turkish. Substantial written work to demonstrate the student's ability to carry out research.

TR 632 Guided Readings in Translation and Interpreting Studies
Guided extended readings in a field of interest to the students. Prerequisite: Consent of the instructor.
