The MA Program in Conference Interpreting offered by Boğaziçi University is a 90 ECTS non-thesis degree program lasting three semesters, offered by the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies within the Institute of Graduate Studies in Social Sciences. The program is a European Union Center of Excellence and a member of the European Masters in Conference Interpreting (EMCI) consortium (https://www.emcinterpreting.org), which recognizes excellence in conference interpreter training. Boğaziçi University is also a member of the EMCI’s Quality Assurance Committee.

The program aims to recruit university graduates who hold a degree in a wide range of subjects, including translation and interpreting, law, business administration, international relations, economics, medicine and engineering As in all courses at Boğaziçi University, the language of instruction for the program will be English. As well as Turkish and English, students need to be competent in French, German, Italian or Spanish. Language combinations offered at each intake will be announced prior to the call for applications and may be expanded in the coming years.

The MA in Conference Interpreting has two major interrelated aims. The first is to provide the students with the skills they need to work as conference interpreters in view of the growing need for multilingual conference interpreters in Turkey. Considering Turkey’s diverse international relations, the need for multilingual interpreters with Turkish as their mother tongue will continue to increase. In order to fulfill their roles as experts in interlingual and intercultural communication in diverse and specialized settings, conference interpreters require a number of linguistic and extralinguistic skills. Accordingly, one of the aims of this program is to train competent multilingual conference interpreters with a profound understanding of the European Union and other international organizations.
