The PhD program in Translation
Studies aims to encourage and promote research and scholarship in all fields
related to translation, including the history of translation in Turkey.
Candidates for admission must be
competent in a third language (in addition to Turkish and English) approved by
the Department and must fulfill all other requirements specified in the
Regulations of the Institute of Social Sciences.
Students entering the program from
outside the Department may be required to take certain prerequisite courses
specified by the Department.
The program requires the successful
completion of 8 courses (24 credits), followed by a qualifying examination, the
submission of a PhD dissertation, and the oral defense of the latter.

Seminar on key texts. Exploration of different concepts of translation (through
the 19th century) and their influence upon the practice of literary translation.
TR 611 Seminar in Contemporary
Translation Theories (3+0+0) 3
In-depth critical analysis of modern theoretical writings on translation.
TR 612 Literary Translation:
Integrating Theory and Practice (3+0+0) 3
Active translation work in poetry and prose. Emphasis on a critical
awareness of theory in the practice of translation.
TR 621 History of Translation in
Ottoman/Turkish Society (3+0+0) 3
Perspectives on the practice of literary/non-literary translation, its
historical and institutional aspects. Translation in relation to cultural change
in the Ottoman and Republican periods. Seminar with the participation of
specialists in the field.
TR 622 Translation Theories and
Critical Practice (3+0+0) 3
Cultivation of skill and sophistication in developing alternative strategies
(based on contemporary translation theories) for the criticism of translated
literary and conceptual writing.
TR 630 Research Methods in
Translation Studies (3+0+0) 3
Survey of recent research and scholarship in translation studies.
Exploration and development of methods applicable to research on the transfer
and reception of texts, and on translated literature in Turkish. Substantial
written work to demonstrate the student's ability to carry out research.
